After confronting San Francisco's supernatural gangster, the corpulent Brother Night, in issue # 1, and then a team-up with pals Black Canary and Vixen to kick off issue # 2, the sultry sorceress, Zatanna Zatara, is looking forward to a well-deserved, good night's sleep. Little does she realize that Brother Night has chose this opportunity to strike back by sending a destructive, demonic imp known as Fuseli to invade the exhausted, seemingly defenseless magician's psyche as she sleeps. The subsequent battle within Zatanna's mind is well worth the price of admission to see. The final page is an ominous hint that the horrific "Blackest Night" isn't over yet for Zatanna, as Brother Night may well have the winning ace up his sleeve.So far, writer Paul Dini and artist Stephane Roux have definitely made good on Zatanna's first ongoing series, as they are providing excellent storytelling and terrific artwork.
Grade: 5 stars out of 5. For ages 12 and up.
Side Note: The variant cover for this issue by Brian Bolland of Zatanna being menaced by demonic caricatures of Batman, Catwoman, and the villainous Dr. Light is fantastic!
